Intel unveils new 64-bit chip in Electronics

Computer chip giant Intel announced today a new platform that dubbed "Truland" which increases application performance, improves server uptime and the ability to manage large sets of data, and can lower utility costs. The new platform, which consists of five new processors and a new chipset, will be targeted at the mid-tier enterprise market. It includes 64-bit Intel Xeon and the Intel E8500 chipset. According to Intel, the 64-bit Intel Xeon processor platform delivers performance increases up to 70% across a range of enterprise and scientific applications over the previous generation Intel Xeon processor. The platform is available with up to 8 MB of Level 3 (L3) cache, a memory reservoir that helps to improve performance.
