Food allergies are very common in America with millions of people suffering from them each year. Food allergies are usually defined as an immune system response to a specific food particle, usually a protein. The most common types of food allergies are from eggs, milk, nuts and soy. You have probably heard about many people not being able to eat nuts or drink milk due to allergic reactions. An allergic reaction may be mild such as itchiness, diarrhea or a slight rash, or severe such as dilation of the throat and the inability to breathe. If you are suffering from a food allergy, there are many treatments available, however usually the best treatment is prevention and that is to stay away from eating specific substances. Most doctors can usually determine very easily if you have an allergic reaction to certain foods. Many times people are intolerant to foods, but do not have an allergy which is due to an immune system reaction. Intolerant foods can cause lots of discomfort and similar symptoms but are usually not as severe or life threatening. If you think you are suffering from a food allergy, it is best to consult with a physician for a proper diagnosis as well as a treatment plan for your condition.
