What is the difference between a portal and a website?

Portal

Website

Authentication

You log-in to the site.
Provides you with information based on who you are.

No log-in.

Personalization

Limited, focused content.
Eliminates the need to visit many different sites.

Extensive, unfocused content written to accommodate anonymous users needs.

Customization

You will select and organize the materials you want to access. Organized with the materials you want to access. For example, a student may want access to KATS, the digital library, K-State Online, RefWorks and online ticket purchasing.

Searchable, but not customizable. All content is there for every visitor.
